Today's world of information technology is all about accessing and managing information in a cost-effective manner, saving valuable time and space.

Research shows that in any business 98 per cent of the documents are stored and archived for future reference after their current utility ends. Large spaces are required for storage of these documents, wasting valuable space. Stored documents are also exposed to the risk of damage, being misplaced or misfiled. Retrieving documents is extremely time consuming. Sometimes, extra manpower is required just to maintain them.

A case profile

Forms processing
A prestigious ongoing project for the registrar general of India (RGI), it involves ICR-based forms processing for creating an all-India census database. The project involves scanning and file-creation of 228 million census information forms collected during the Census of India 2001, from households all over India.

The imaging solution offered by CMC - involving intelligent character recognition (ICR) technology - is derived from Top Image Systems of Israel, the world leaders in census applications, using high-end scanners from Kodak. CMC supplied and maintains 25 high-end Kodak scanners. It also supplied and tuned the ICR software and manages the complete scanning operation at 15 RGI data centres across the country, in a two-shift operation involving close to 150 scanner operators and supervisors. In addition, 1200 RGI staff are being trained in use of the ICR technology and the relevant software. The project started in November 2001.
