industry standard PC/104 CPU 80x86 core.
It hosts a real-time kernel for real-time
response in data acquisition and control.
Input /
output modules
CMCs
RTU has a variety of digital and analog
input/output modules to meet different
application needs. These modules are connected
to the processor module by a common bus.
Field points (I/O points from and to the
process) are connected to special signal
conditioning modules, which isolate and
protect the I/O modules.
Digital
input module
The
digital input module monitors and detects
changes in the state of discrete devices
in a process. These inputs can be normally
open or normally closed potential-free
contacts. The module can both detect and
record, with time, the momentary change
or can monitor the status of the input
contacts. The signal-conditioning module
(associated with the digital input module)
incorporates galvanic isolation of the
field points and has a transient suppressor.
This enhances the transient withstanding
capability of the RTU.
Digital
output module
The digital output module can control
the process by changing the status of
output contacts. The digital output signal
conditioning module provides low power
relay contact outputs on an open collector,
which can be interfaced to the control
circuit of the process.
Analog
input module
The analog input module includes a
high precision analog to digital converter,
sample and hold unit and a CMOS multiplexer.
The system executes continuous analog
to digital conversions and stores current
digital values. Thus the latest data is
always available for the host. The AI
signal-conditioning module accepts voltage
and industry-standard current inputs besides
protecting the inputs.
Analog
output module
The
analog output module provides analog outputs,
which can be used to driver a variety
of recorders like the strip-chart and
x-y, and also to driver continuous control
devices using appropriate (voltage or
current) analog output signal conditioning
module.
Transducer-less
power line monitoring modules are also
available as part of an RTU. These modules
are used in distribution automation applications.
They compute the power line parameters:
voltage, current, power, frequency etc.
