CMC Solution
for Passenger Information System
Hyderabad,
February 5, 2004
CMC Ltd, a Tata enterprise,
is in the forefront of providing IT solutions
for the transport sector for over two
decades. Apart from the flagship projects
for the railways like the Impress
railway reservation system, ARTS
the unreserved ticketing system, freight
operations information system (FOIS) for
Indian Railways, CMC is actively contributing
to the deployment of IT solutions for
the State Road Transport Corporations.
Mr R Ramanan, CEO and MD CMC Limited,
informs that CMC is proud to be associated
with the real time passenger information
system (RTPIS) for Andhra Pradesh State
Road Transport Corporation and department
of information and technology (DIT), Government.
of India by developing and deploying a
vehicle tracking & real time information
system.
The RTPIS assimilates state of the art
GPS technology, GSM / GPRS technology
and Geographical Information System. The
GPS-based RTPIS is indigenously developed
by CMC Limited, at its in-house R&D.
The System facilitates and integrates
the dispatch functions of communications,
incident management, and fleet control.
The system allows APSRTC to track the
buses by displaying the information on
a digital map at the RTPIS control centre.
Using advanced prediction algorithm, the
estimated arrival time (ETA) of each bus
is computed and automatically transmitted
to the display boards at the respective
bus stops. The drivers can send digital
message to the RTPIS control centre using
the message buttons and can receive message
which will be displayed in Telugu and
English on the vehicle mounted unit. Facilities
also have been provided for voice communication
to handle emergencies.
The pilot implementation
of RTPIS includes 26 buses within the
Hyderabad city and 49 buses operating
in between Hyderabad - Vijayawada and
beyond. The vehicle mounted unit along
with GSM / GPRS modems have been installed
in these buses. The vehicle mounted unit,
which includes the GPS receiver, computes
the location of the buses and transfers
the position data using GSM / GPRS technology,
to the RTPIS control centre of APSRTC.
Display boards located at Hyderabad, Suryapet,
Kodad, and Vijaywada provides information
of estimated time of arrival of buses,
type of services, destination identity
and number of seats available in the approaching
bus.
The RTPIS inaugurated,
by the honourable chief minister of Andhra
Pradesh, Mr N Chandrababu Naidu in Hyderabad
will benefit the commuters waiting for
buses at the terminuses as well as facilitating
drivers to communicate to the central
control station, in case of exigencies.
Mr R Ramanan, while congratulating the
management of APSRTC for the initiative,
meant for citizen services improvement,
informs that CMC is positioning this proven
solution for other state road transport
corporations and fleet management / service
companies who need to track their vehicle
deployment for better operations management
and service delivery.
