From map generation to deposit modelling to scheduling of earthmoving machinery; CMC can make mining CRYSTAL clear

The product
CRYSTAL: Survey, Geo-Modeling and Mine Planning Software
A complete mine planning system. A user-friendly package with powerful graphical tools and a quick response time

The client
Indian Aluminium Co Ltd (INDAL)
Talabira coal project, Sambhalpur, Orissa
A major producer of aluminium and its finished products, INDAL is a vertically integrated company with its own bauxite mines, alumina refinery, aluminium smelters, power plants, coal mines, sheet and foil rolling mills and aluminium extrusion plants, spread all over India.

INDAL wanted to implement CRYSTAL to suit its mining practice at the Talabira Coal Project. This project uses surface miner for extraction of coal with proper quality control. Geophysical loggers are being used to infer calorific values down the hole in production-stage-drilling.

INDAL required a software that is tailored to match such practices at the mine site and reposed confidence in CMC, based on our past record.

Project details
Crystal uses geological exploration and survey data to generate a three-dimensional block model of mineral reserves. The model is then estimated for assay variables, using either the enhanced inverse square distance method, Kriging, or both, to have two different estimates for each block. The block model is then used to analyse whether the mineral is economically viable for mining.

Crystal software is used to carry out critical planning and quality-control jobs on a day-to-day basis. It also does survey calculations and volume computation, including daily updates of the excavated 3-D block model from survey data.

The software provides an interface to almost all electronic total stations and EDMs. It even allows keying in of manually recorded survey data from theodolites. This data is then used to calculate the X, Y and Z coordinates of the surveyed features.

Crystal can generate mine maps on any scale. It has a module devoted to geo-statistics, with which the user can carry out geo-statistical calculations on either raw borehole data or filtered data from the 3-D block model. The user can view the mineral reserve in three dimensions. This module uses the Open GL graphics library to provide the user with state-of-the-art graphics.

Quality control system

CRYSTAL has been installed and implemented for INDAL's new Talabira coal project in the Sambhalpur district of Orissa. It will supply coal to the company's captive power plant at Hirakud, in Orissa.

The software meets the requirements of mine survey, geo-modelling and production planning for the long term, as well as for day-to-day mine operations. It helps in production planning, while taking care of the stringent quality requirements of the power plant. It also schedules sophisticated mining machinery like the state-of-the-art surface miner and ripper dozers, increasing the productivity of these capital-intensive machines.
