Focus on Quality

Quality is a factor that is today taken as assumed. But, at CMC Limited, we do not take anything for granted. We are committed to creating value for customers through our Information Technology services and products, and we assure this through the quality systems that we have built into our organisation. CMC subscribes to the Business Excellence philosophy and a Quality Management System in line with ISO 9001:2008, CMMI, PCMM and SPICE.
This is the way in which we have built global quality:
- We have evolved quality measures for all life-cycle phases of services and products.
- We have set up systems, procedures and standards to minimise errors, defects and rework, and to continually improve quality levels.
- We make fact based decisions in accordance with quality benchmark.
Certification of quality standards
In its pursuit of excellence, the company has developed a quality management system in line with ISO 9001 standards and implemented it first at the CMC R&D Centre in Hyderabad, India.
In June 2002, the Hyderabad R&D Centre was awarded the coveted ISO 9001:2000 certificate for three years by STQC certification services, for its application-specific development centres — the international systems group, ports and cargo, and research and development. The certification has been renewed successively every three years and last it has been renewed in May 2011 with extended scope, which covers Analysis, Design, Development, Testing, Customisation, Installation and Maintenance of General Purpose and Custom Built Software, Embedded Systems and Services, Products Related Services Including onsite Consultancy Services and Infrastructure Solutions & Integration Services (IS & IS) Covering Help Desk Operations, Third Party Maintenance, Third Party Equipment Supply and Integration Services.
In September 2002, our northern region (Systems Integration) operations received an ISO 9001:2000 certificate from STQC for a period of three years. The scope of this certification covers software design, development, maintenance and system integration, including turnkey projects.
In Dec 2011, our Education & Training Solutions & Services Business Unit has received ISO 9001:2008 certificate from STQC for a period of 3 years. The scope of the certificate covers Design, Development, Delivery of Education & Training Solutions and Services of all regions of the organisation.
Our Western Region (Systems Integration) operations were assessed at SEI CMM Level 5 (level 5 of the capability maturity model for software, ver 1.1 by the Software Engineering Institute, Carnegie Mellon University, USA) in 2003. After that, in January 2005, two of the company's units, the Hyderabad R&D Centre and Southern Region and in December 2005 Northern and Eastern Region Systems Integration Business Unit were assessed at Level 5 of the Capability Maturity Model (CMM).
Later, our Development, Maintenance and Testing Projects being executed under Embedded Systems and System Integration Business Units of CMC Hyderabad was assessed at maturity level 5 of Capability Maturity Model Integration(CMMI) for Development, ver 1.2 of the Software Engineering Institute (SEI), at Carnegie Mellon University, Pittsburgh, PA, USA in October 2009. In May 2011, software development and enhancement projects of our Software Solutions and Integration Services Business Units of Western and Eastern Region Delivery Centers also got appraised at maturity level 5 of Capability Maturity Model Integration (CMMI) for Development, ver 1.2
In November 2011, CMC got appraised at maturity level 3 of The People Capability Maturity Model (People CMM) ver 2.0 of the Software Engineering Institute (SEI), at Carnegie Mellon University, Pittsburgh, PA, USA. This will ensure continuous development of our workforce capabilities and establish culture of excellence to serve our customer better.
The Automotive Electronics Division of CMC is certified at Automotive SPICE Level 3 of the SPICE standard (ISO/IEC 15504). The process is developed to cater to the complete system/product development lifecycle of the automotive domain.
In January 2009, STP operation of CMC ER got assessed for ISO 27001 compliance. Later the Information Security Management Framework was extended to all other Delivery Centres. In March 2012, CMC got recertified for ISO 27001 compliance and this time certification scope extended to include Systems Engineering & Integration (SE&I) Services consisting of Infrastructure Solutions & Integration Services (CS), Software Solutions & Integration Services (SI), Education & Training Solutions & Services (E&T), Embedded & Real Time Solutions & Engineering Services (EMSYS), Digitisation And Workflow Solutions & Integration Services (ITeS), and support functions, as applicable, to the locations at India – North: Noida; South: Chennai, Hyderabad (CMC Center); East: Kolkata (SDF and Technopolis). The scope of work under Digitisation and Workflow Solutions & Integration Services (ITeS) Business Unit extends to include India locations Bangalore, Posnett Bhavan Hyderabad, SEZ Hyderabad; SEZ Kolkata; Mumbai, Pune, Ahmedabad; in addition to the locations covered for SE&I services. In April 2012, Austin Delivery Center also has been assessed for ISO 27001 compliance.
With the advent of safety standards the QMS is updated with the safety lifecycle activities also catering to the safety standards of ISO 26262, ATEX standard,Cenelec.
Our Infrastructure Solutions & Integration Services SBU has in place a process for continuous enhancement of skill levels of its staff, through certifications in all areas of service offerings, including technology certifications for HP, Cisco, Unix, Oracle, etc.
Quality fraternity
The training programmes and seminars conducted by CMC professionals provide an opportunity for sharing experience and learning more about quality methods, with co-practitioners. Process Asset Libraries are also helping in knowledge sharing across projects, Business Units and geographies.
Business excellence
We have adopted the Tata Business Excellence Model (TBEM) as a framework for achieving organisational excellence. The framework is a holistic approach to excellence in management practices and is based on the Malcolm Baldrige award process for companies in the US. Companywide awareness programmes have been initiated and various internal assessors have been qualified by Tata Quality Management Services (TQMS).
